Eliane Steinmeyer, managing director of Hamburg market elected to the WUWM Board of Directors

During the spring congress from 18 to 20 May in Lublin (Poland), the members of the World Union of Wholesale market (WUWM) elected Eliane Steinmeyer, managing director of the Wholesale market for Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers in Hamburg, to the Board of Directors, the organization’s governing body. Dr Don Darnall (USA) became the new chairman, and Zengjun Ma (China) is now vice-chairman.

Active participation in the work of the WUWM and a place on the Board of Directors are both long-standing traditions at Hamburg Wholesale Market. The election of Eliane Steinmeyer to the Board ensures that Germany’s markets continue to be a firm fixture in the WUWM.

The WUWM has more than 200 members from over 40 countries; meetings at professional congresses and bilateral contacts give members the opportunity to exchange expert knowledge about the operation of food markets - be they wholesale, retail or street markets.

Eliane Steinmeyer says, “I am looking forward to working with markets from across the world. Although the situation varies enormously from country to country, there are numerous important topics for close cooperation and a regular, constructive exchange of views. Food safety, reducing the amount of food that is thrown away, environment protection issues at markets and the changing eating habits of customers are just some of the issues that affect us all in this globalized world.”
